Because we are unable to offer the appropriate facilities for babies and younger children, and it only ends in tears, the minimum age for children staying with us is 8 years old. One child of up to 12 years old maximum may share a family room (see below) with adult occupants. The 2-course a la carte dinner, bed and full English breakfast rate is £75 per child per night.
We have two family rooms that can accommodate two adults and one child (room 10 or room 3).
Our Best Courtyard room (10) is an external room and is probably more suitable for older children. The Better House room (3) is upstairs in the main building. In both instances, the sleeping arrangement is a Smooff bed which goes on the floor. Similar to a futon, you can check out the images online. The Smooffs are the adult size but will still not be comfortable for very tall or heavy children.
Please note there is no children’s menu available in the evening but we can always cook items on the a la carte more plainly.

We are dog owners ourselves, and love the furry beasts, so please don’t stress the system in such a way that causes us to change our dog-welcoming policy. Notes below might help!
PLEASE BE AWARE that we must be notified if you are bringing a dog or dogs and you must have booked a Best Garden room. Anyone arriving during May-September who has not done so and intends to leave their dog(s) in the car will be turned away and the usual cancellation charge levied. Our car park is absolutely NOT suitable for dogs to be left in cars as there is no shade and full sun throughout the day.
Dogs are charged at £6 per night, per dog.We welcome a maximum of two per room in five specified Best Garden rooms, provided they don’t run amok, bite or bark and are house-trained! That means we cannot accept puppies under 5 months old, however cute, and please don’t bring elderly dogs whom you know are incontinent as we reserve the right to charge for any damage caused to the carpet or soft furnishings. We may also have to charge if the room has to be taken off for odour sanitisation (labs and retrievers being the biggest culprits in this respect. I’d love to know why!)
We provide poop bags and a disposal bin, towels for drying wet fur/hair, a blanket that protects the bed linen, and a rubberised tray to put dog bowls on. We also provide a welcoming bag of hand-baked organic cheese biscuits (that human owners have been known to eat – which is fine as they are just made from flour, butter, eggs and cheese in our own kitchen).
There are numerous joyful walks to be had in the locality, and the castle grounds are close enough
for a late night ‘comfort break’.
We also have a special doggie table (30) where owners can bring their dog while they eat. It is sited between the bar and the main restaurant and is very popular, so reserving this table when booking a room is recommended. (NB not available during two weeks of Christmas when the pesky reindeer take up residence – we keep warning them …)
We require a valid credit card to secure bookings and reserve the right to charge the card for cancellations falling outside the permitted time scales, as detailed below. By giving us your credit card details to secure your booking you are agreeing to our terms and conditions and cancellation policy and authorising us to make the relevant charges to the credit card without any additional consent being required.
1 Your reservation is made with Exploits Ltd trading as the The Crown and Castle and represents a legally binding contract between you and the hotel.
2 We always endeavour to re-sell cancelled rooms and, if successful, will reimburse you pro rata with the exception of single Friday night bookings and bookings made within 7 days of arrival for which payment is taken at the time of booking and is totally non-refundable. 3 We strongly advise that holiday insurance is taken out for festive packages or bookings of two rooms or more and/or stays of three nights or longer.
Bookings made within 7 days of arrival or for a single Friday night stay or for a single Saturday night stay at any time. Full payment is charged to the credit card given at the time of booking. Any amendment to the booking or cancellation will be treated as a cancellation and no refund will be given.
Bookings of 1 room for a Friday and Saturday 2-night stay

Bookings of 2 or more rooms for a Friday and Saturday 2-night stay
If 21 days’ notice of cancellation or part-cancellation or any changes to the date(s) of the original booking is not received before the confirmed arrival date the cost of 2 nights for each room affected will be charged at the standard bed and breakfast rate as shown on our published tariff.
Bookings of 1 room for a 1 or 2 night Sunday to Thursday stay

Bookings of 2 or more rooms for a 3 to 5-night Sunday to Thursday stay
If 21 days’ notice of cancellation or part-cancellation or any change to the date(s) of the original booking is not received before the confirmed arrival date the cost of the first 3 nights’ stay for each room affected will be charged at the standard bed and breakfast rate as shown on our published tariff.
Exceptional bookings that fall outside the above parameters and which have been arranged especially with either Tim Sunderland or Ruth Watson are subject to the specific booking terms, deposit, payment, cancellation, part-cancellation or change of date(s) conveyed in the offer and/or confirmation correspondence.
Festive Bookings & Packages (e.g. Christmas, Easter, New Year, etc.)
Deposits given at the time of booking are non-refundable. At the point where full payment has been taken, the entire cost of the package is non-refundable unless the package can be re-sold in full, in which case we will reimburse the full amount less the non-refundable deposit.
St. Valentine’s, Easter, summer Bank Holiday, Christmas and New Year are all subject to special booking and cancellation terms. These will be notified at the time of booking and can also be obtained
in writing on request.
Extra Booking Details
Service charge: all food and beverage items, except for breakfast, are subject to a 10% discretionary service charge (which means you are free to opt out). We have done this in order to comply better
with HMRC guidelines.
Local wedding parties: we regret that we cannot accommodate guests attending local weddings, who merely want a place to stay. Experience has shown that wedding guests’ needs are not compatible with our regular guests who value the hotel for its good food and peaceful ambience. We know this decision does not go down well but are prepared to take the flak in order to protect those who support us year in, year out.
Special offers: all “late” bookings (i.e. those made within 7 days of arrival) are subject to pre-payment, with no refund available for cancellation.
Gift vouchers: those with a monetary value may be used as payment against any booking that complies with our normal terms and conditions but may not be exchanged for money or other services. Vouchers that show a gift may only be used for that particular gift and may not be used as part-payment or cash against other services, including any special offer that might be running. Please note the voucher(s) must be used within the time-frame specified and that this cannot be extended.
Group bookings: the maximum number of rooms that can be booked for any one night by a party of guests is five . We require 21 days’ notice of cancellation or part-cancellation or any change to the date(s) of the original booking or appropriate penalty charges will be applied, i.e. 1 night’s standard bed & breakfast rate per room affected, per night affected.). The booking must either be guaranteed with credit card details supplied by each room’s occupant(s) or the organiser will be required to guarantee all the rooms on his/her credit card. For lunch or dinner reservations,our private dining room, the Parlour, will be used.
Smoking: the entire hotel site, except for the main public terrace out of lunch hours, is non-smoking. If a bedroom has to be taken off to allow for deep-cleaning and airing before another guest can occupy it, we will charge an extra night’s stay at the prevailing B&B rate to the credit card given to secure the booking.
Single Saturday night and 2-night weekend stays: we normally require a minimum 2-night stay at the weekend, i.e. Friday and Saturday nights. However, if a midweek stay has extended into the Friday, we will always sell the Saturday night on its own, so it’s worth an ask. We do not sell Saturday and Sunday together as a weekend package, unless the Friday night has already been sold. In all cases, the room is sold on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, not bed and breakfast only. If you are worried about arriving in time for Friday dinner you are welcome to have a 3-course Sunday lunch in its place.
Single occupancy: Our Good House and Best Garden rooms are available for single occupancy. Please speak to reservations for availability and precise terms.
Guests’ own alcohol: We prefer that guests do not bring their own liquor as selling drinks and wine – and food and accommodation – is our core business. (As Tim says, he doesn’t take his own spark plugs to the garage when he is having his car serviced!) We charge £25 corkage for still wines and £35 for sparkling wines. We also make a room service charge of £10 for guests drinking their own liquor in their rooms but wanting ice, ice buckets, glasses, etc. to be provided.
Parking: we have enough parking on site for nearly every room but when we are full guests may occasionally have to use the very nearby Castle car park, where we have an arrangement. Please always come to reception first so we can help with bags.
